The province has committed to widening the sidewalk on the suspension part of the bridge to 2.0 metres (it will be actually 2.67 metres but there will be supports every few metres thus reducing the available width). The Stanley Park Causeway will also be widened to 2.0 metres. The North Viaduct will be widened to 2.0 metres. These improvements will greatly increase the number of people cycling and walking on the bridge, making futher widening essential.
The Ministry of Transportation and Highways Interim Cycling Policy recommends a width of 3.7 metres for such a structure.
The Lions Gate is a crucial link for commuter, recreational, racing and touring cyclists as well as serving as an alternate route for the Cross Canada Trail. The bridge must be safe and accessible for everyone including families and inexperienced cyclists.
The planned widening of the sidewalk on the suspension part of the bridge will greatly increase the number of cyclists using the bridge, making the widening of the Viaduct sidewalk essential. It is estimated that up to 3000 people will cycle or walk over the bridge per day. By comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge carries 10,000 cyclists and pedestrians per day. We need to make the route cyclist- friendly to encourage people to cycle instead of drive, The estimate widening the North Viaduct to 2.67 metres will cost 2.5 million dollars. They claim any futher widening of the Viaduct or Bridge will cost from 25-50 million dollars but it never hurts to push them on this. They may be able to come up with some innovative solutions if they have to.
Thanks
Richard the Lion Gate Hearted (of the VACC)
